Amankora Spiritual Journey

  • Day 01 - Dubai / Delhi / Paro / Thimphu

    After lunch at the lodge, head to the north end of the valley to view Trashi Chhoe Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and royal office, and pay a visit to Pangri Zampa, two 16th century buildings that now house a monastic training school for astrologers. 

    At the head of the valley, take a short hike to Cheri Goemba, the monastery where the first monastic body was established. Back in town, visit a few of the capital’s cottage industries ranging from traditional paper making to hand rolled incense.

    Today see an early departure for a dramatic approx. 5-hours drive over the high mountain pass of Dochu La (3050m) and on to the Phobjika Valley. Sights on the way include one of Bhutan’s first fortress monasteries, the 17th century Simtokha Dzong, and ancient wall paintings at the Hongtsho Goemba monastery.

    The descent down through the Punakha Valley along the Kingdom’s only east-west highway continues through the scenic village of Wangdi. Enjoy a picturesque picnic lunch en-route. Check into your lodge.

    Explore Gangtey Goemba hidden in the beautiful Phobjikha Valley. Here, you enjoy a short 1½ hours nature trail from the monastery through the jungle before emerging to the valley floor and ending at a local school. The beautiful glacial valley bowl below the goemba is peppered with villages, potato fields and padi fields.

    This evening, be treated to a very special Candle-lit Potato Shed Dinner. In the midst of the local farmers’ autumn potato harvest, Bhutanese wooden furniture and the flickering candles - you create the perfect setting for an intimate dinner for you! Start your evening with some ara, the local wine, by the bonfire outside, and enjoy dinner in the rural surroundings whilst a local musician entertains with folk music!

    If you are looking for the stunning Longtey Village hike through some of the most beautiful parts of Gangtey. The path will lead through bush bamboo and rhododendron forest towards a clusters of village houses yaks grazing in the area in winter. For the next two hours or so, you might feel like you are in the settings of Lord of The Rings surrounded by tall old trees !

    The last part through the forest is slightly steeper uphill until you reach the pass with impressive views. Enjoy a picnic lunch before heading towards the idyllic Kumbu village. Be driven back to the lodge or hike back. Enjoy some free time, perhaps to enjoy a nice hot-stone bath in your lodge.

    Time: 30 minute drive to the starting point, 3 - 5 hour walk back towards the lodge.

    This morning, be driven back to Punakha ( 3 ½ hours) and check into your lodge. From the pass, you begin descending through varied forest and finally emerging into the highly cultivated valley of Punakha.

    Take a short hike through beautiful rice fields to Chimmi Lhakhang, a temple dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, who as a favorite saint of the Bhutanese people is known affectionately as "the Divine Madman". The temple is on a hillside in the middle of rice fields and has become a pilgrimage site for childless couples. Enjoy some tea and snacks at the end of hike while overlooking the fields.

    Have some free time in the late afternoon enjoying the lodge.

  • DAY 06 - PUNAKHA

    Your day in Punakha Valley begins with a hike up thru fields of chillies, cabbages and rice along the banks of the Mo Chhu to the upper end of the valley to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten. Returning through the valley, you will have plenty of time to take in the impressive Punakha Dzong, home to the remains of Bhutan’s first ruler.

    Afternoon, enjoy your complimentary Private Riverside BBQ lunch along the edge of the Mo Chhu river! Our Chef will prepare the menu tailor-made to your requests while you sit back and take the exotic aromas of the food cooking on the grill.

    Following lunch, a quick drive will take you to the village of Talo where you will walk the stunning, quiet grounds of the village temple and perhaps visit the home village of the Kingdom’s four Queens.

    After descending from Dochu La, you will follow your way back up the dramatic Wang Chu and Paro Chu river valleys. In the afternoon, take a quick stroll to the nearby ruins, a visit to some of the valley’s oldest and holiest religious monuments or a ramble down Paro’s main street.

    Evenings at Amankora may include informative lectures on the history, religion, flora and fauna of the region or an intriguing movie on the Himalayas.

  • DAY 08 - Paro

    Today, visit the iconic 17th century Paro Rinpung Dzong which means “the fortress of the heap of jewels.” It houses a community of monks and the administrative government of Paro District - an epitome of how religion intertwines with the Bhutanese way of life!

    From the Dzong, the tour crosses Nyamai Zampa, a traditional cantilevered bridge, and town temple built in 1525, to view ancient wall paintings. Enjoy a visit to a traditional farmhouse for lunch with a local family.

    The afternoon will begin with a hike to view one of Bhutan’s most revered monuments, the Taktshang Monastery, more commonly referred to as the “Tiger’s Nest”. The four to five hour return trek offers spectacular views of this sacred monastery perched on a cliff face 900m above the valley floor.

  • DAY 09 - Paro / Kathmandu / Dubai

    After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home via Delhi
